Use tags as the key element for organizing information in Wesabe. Ideally every transaction will have one or more tags, and Wesabe makes this easy. Under each account name you'll see a link to untagged transactions.
Auto-tags: Tags put in the Tags field will be assigned to all transactions that have the same name as this merchant. Note: if you change a tag on a transaction it also affects every other transaction, even past ones, which had that same merchant.
One time tags: Under the Tags field there is a link to open the One time tags field, where you can specify tags that apply only to the current transaction.
Multiple tags: Separate multiple tags by spaces. For example, clothing business.
Multi-word tags: Since spaces are used to separate tags, in order to have a multi-word tags you must enclose the phrase in double quotes, such as: "health insurance", or substitute a separator character for the space, such as: insurance-health.
Splits: Ordinarily the full amount of a transaction is assigned to all tags you include, but you can assign portions of the amount to specific tags by tagging in the form -- tag:amount. For example, groceries:50 gift:10 medical:20
Hierarchical tags: To help keep track of tags used for primary vs. secondary tags, some users add a prefix. For example:
Time Warner Cable -- 1Entertainment tv
Cinemark -- 1Entertainment movies
or...
Walmart -- gift _christmas
Target -- gift _birthday
Note that Wesabe actually infers the hierarchy (without regard for how you name the tags) by making the primary tag the one that is common (for drill down pie charts, and maybe other things as well). In the above example, "gift" is the primary tag and "_christmas" and "_birthday" are considered secondary tags.
Comments when this was on the Frontpage
- DavidQ: Where would be a good place to refer people to a Chart of Accounts to serve as a starting point for organizing tags?
- Bama91: You can add a new page to the wiki called "Tags" (or whatever you want) and add a link to it in your tip. It would be interesting to have users post their tag lists. A new user might find one that is a close fit for their financial situation.
- David Mee: Is this really the case? I thought Wesabe automagically worked out hierachy based on frequency of use of tag?
- Bama91: I added some clarity to the sub-topic "hierarchical tags". If someone has a different understanding of how this works, please edit. As of January, 2009, there are some issues with how tags and sub-tags are interpreted inside of splits for pie chart drill downs.
